I am learning that having a spirit of discernment allows me to meet life with an open heart while remaining thoughtful about what I welcome into it.
Every day, I encounter ideas, beliefs, emotions, and experiences that invite me to give them meaning. Some feel familiar because they echo what I grew up hearing. Others challenge the understanding I have carried for years. Discernment gives me room to pause and ask: Do I believe this because I have examined it, or because I have always known it?
I can honor where I come from while allowing my understanding to grow.
There are moments when something feels deeply true, yet I am learning to give that feeling time. I can listen to my intuition, examine the evidence, and remain willing to see differently. Even a powerful impression deserves thoughtful attention before it becomes a conclusion.
Within my relationship with the divine, discernment is a practice of listening with humility. I pray, reflect, observe, and allow understanding to unfold. I do not need to have an immediate answer to every experience.
Sometimes, the wisest words I can offer are: I do not know yet.
As my awareness grows, I begin to recognize how memory, fear, hope, and love influence what I perceive. I can acknowledge those influences without allowing them to make every decision for me. I can feel an emotion fully and still choose my response carefully.
This brings a gentleness to the way I see others. I can notice a troubling pattern without claiming to know everything about the person behind it. I can set a boundary without turning someone into an enemy. I can change my mind without feeling that I have betrayed myself.
Having a spirit of discernment means taking responsibility for what I believe, what I repeat, and what I allow to guide my life.
My heart remains open. My understanding remains teachable. My choices become more intentional.
And as I grow, I give truth room to deepen—beyond familiarity, beyond first impressions, and beyond the limits of what I once thought I knew.
